Dozens of passionate wheelchair tennis players have battled it out at the Lee Valley Tennis Centre for the chance to play at Wimbledon.
Players competed on March 11 and March 12 at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre as part of a new ‘Play your way to Wimbledon” tournament.
The matches served as initial qualifiers for National Finals, which will take place at Wimbledon from August 6 until August 12.
A record number of 30 players competed on the venue’s indoor courts in five categories – men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and, for the first time, a junior competition of singles and doubles.
Paskell Blackwell, sports and active recreation officer at Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome players from as far afield as Wales to Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre this weekend - which was purpose built for the 2012 Paralympics Wheelchair Tennis events.
“Closer to home, it was also fantastic to see representatives from our weekly wheelchair tennis sessions in attendance – we are committed to providing additional playing opportunities for our local and regional community and in turn play our part in increasing wheelchair tennis participation”.
