Trains are now running again on an Overground line that was closed for more than two weeks.

The line between Liverpool Street and Chingford was shut for 16 days last month while Network Rail replaced a railway bridge in Hackney.

The 150-year-old bridge, which sits at the junction of Downs Park Road and Bodney Road, extends over the Overground track.

Train bosses said that the bridge needed to be demolished and replaced, as it was in a “very poor condition”.

Engineers have now built the structure of the replacement bridge, although work on finishing it is not yet complete.

The road and pavement still need to be put in place, and the bridge is not expected to fully re-open to pedestrians and traffic until early next year.

But Overground trains should mainly now run as expected in the coming months, except during three separate weekend closures.

Disruption is expected on August 17 and 18, as well as on September 1 and 8. Passengers have been urged to check before they travel on these dates.

Other works carried out by Network Rail during the most recent closure include repairs and refurbishment of the stairs at Clapton and repairs to station canopies at Chingford, Clapton and Walthamstow Central.

Simon Milburn, Network Rail Anglia infrastructure director, said: “Thousands of people travel under and over this bridge every day by rail and road, and our project is vital to keeping their future journeys safe and reliable.

“We’re sorry to have caused the disruption to people’s journeys this summer but the replacement bridge will serve the community for generations to come.”
