A teenage boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 15-year-old was stabbed to death in Hackney.

Police were called to reports of a stabbing in Stellman Close, Stoke Newington, at around 4pm yesterday afternoon (July 23).

A 15-year-old boy was found at the scene with stab wounds, and died shortly afterwards.

Police arrested a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of murder later that evening.

He is currently in police custody for questioning.

Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, who leads policing in Hackney, says the dead boy’s family are “heartbroken”.

He added: “I know the community will be searching for answers today and will be shocked and angry at this tragic loss of life.

“I want them to know that we will do everything in our power to provide those answers and bring those responsible to justice.

“Our investigation continues at pace today with officers conducting house-to-house enquiries, reviewing hours of CCTV, and speaking to witnesses.

“Local people can also expect to see a higher police presence in the area over the coming days as our enquiries continue.”

Most of Stellman Close remains closed off by police while forensic enquiries are carried out. It is expected that these closures will remain in place “for several days”.

DCS Conway said: “We believe that the suspect ran away from the scene.

“If you were in the area at around 4pm please contact us.

“Any information – no matter how insignificant it might seem – may prove vital in our investigation.
