A gay romantic thriller starring Kirsten Stewart has proved a hit with film lovers in Dalston.
Rio, a Grade II listed cinema in Kingsland High Street, has revealed that it twice sold out its main 400-seat screen for Love Lies Bleeding over the Bank Holiday weekend.
The film, the second by Tottenham-based director Rose Glass, follows the relationship between Kirsten Stewart’s gym manager and an up-and-coming bodybuilder.
Mixing bodybuilding, murder and sex, Love Lies Bleeding has proved a hit with critics since its release last Friday (May 3), and it appears film lovers in Hackney agree.
Its popularity at the Rio ensured that the cinema recorded the highest box office figures for the film out of any venue in the UK, topping more than 270 other locations.
The weekend screening at the Rio included a special event – a Q&A with Rose Glass – who previously directed critically-acclaimed horror film Saint Maud.
Love Lies Bleeding will continue its run at the Rio through this week and into the next.
