An “extremely dangerous” Hackney man has been found guilty of raping a woman in south London.

Mohammad Idriss, 18, of Pembury Road, was found guilty following a trial at Kingston Crown Court yesterday (March 16).

On July 23, 2022 at 12.05am, Idriss was loitering in Kingston town centre, south London, when he approached the woman before raping her in a churchyard near Clarence Street.

He also stole two of her bank cards and used them to buy food and drink at various places across the town centre.

The rape was reported to police the same day and an investigation was launched.

​CCTV showed Idriss approaching the victim and forensic tests identified him as the suspect.

He was arrested at his home in Hackney on July 26, 2022.

Idriss refused to make any comments during his police interviews and was charged and remanded shortly afterwards.

During the trial, the victim was allowed to provide evidence in court with only the judge and barristers present so she did not have to see her rapist.

Specialist officers supported the victim following the attack.

Detective Constable Troy Sampson, who led the investigation, said: “Mohammad Idriss is an extremely dangerous individual who targeted an innocent woman.

“His actions that night have caused serious harm and will have a lasting impact.

“My job is to investigate serious sexual offences and bring those responsible to justice, I am pleased with the result in court and take comfort in knowing he is in prison and cannot harm anyone else.

“Reporting a rape can seem scary or daunting but I want to reassure anyone who this has happened to that we will fully support you and conduct a full and thorough investigation.”

Idriss will be sentenced at Kingston Crown Court on Friday, May 19.
