Alice in Wonderland style giant tea bowls have been dished up at a Hackney museum as part of a festival dedicated to the garden.

The huge chinaware, which are planted with tea-themed plants to celebrate the history of the brew in English homes, are displayed at the Geffrye Museum in Kingsland Road as part of the Chelsea Fringe.

The history of tea, how it was imported, where and how it was drunk are explored throughout the museum, which is dedicated to the interior of English homes. The bowls were decorated by children from the Morningside children’s centre Chatham Place, Homerton with the help of artist Bill Hudson. The children then worked with the gardener at the Geffrye Museum to fill them with the plants.

Nancy Loader, a spokeswoman for the Geffrye Museum, said: “We have participated in the Chelsea Fringe for the last three years. We are delighted to be a part of it again.”
