A new Clapton pub has come under fire for being “insensitive” after complaining about helping a stab victim on Saturday night.

Bonneville pub on Lower Clapton Road was forced to close early after a man sought shelter in the premises after being stabbed in the shoulder about 6pm on Urswick Road in Homerton.

The person manning the @BonnevilleE5 twitter account tweeted: “#CSIClapton due to events on Lower Clapton Road this evening, we will unfortunately have to close #WelcomeToHackney”.

Neighbouring Dreyfus Cafe, also on Lower Clapton Road, responded saying: “Ugh. Sounds horrendous. Poor kid. And definitely not what you want for your first Saturday evening. Sorry to hear it.”

The pub responded at 7.04pm, saying: “Some kid got stabbed over the road and decided to run into ours. Great look for our first week.”

The comments did not go down well on social media, with hundreds expressing their disgust.

Hackney resident Glynn Harries tweeted: “Bunch of yuppie t******. U think you so clever so bloody cool. U just got more money than morals. No better than Donald Trump.”

Pedro Molesto added: “Remember, if you need urgent medical attention don’t go to @BonnevilleE5 because that’s not a good look for them.”

Sar East Caff added: “I’ve made a mental note never to go there #lostcustom #heartlessb****.”

Meanwhile Johnny Chiodini said: “Quite happy to say I’ll never be crossing the threshold at @BonnevilleE5. May they discover a sense of compassion soon.”

The Bonneville pub then removed the comments and The Bonneville went on to apologise for the tweets, saying: “After last nights events, we would like to apologise profusely for the comments on twitter, which were of course very insensitive.”

Outraged local resident Mario Demetriou said: “When it blew up in their face they took it off their Twitter account and gave a feeble apology, very insensitive and removed.

“I think it’s indicative of what’s going on in the whole of London where you have these polar opposites of incredibly rich and incredibly poor not mixing, when two classes or worlds collide, it’s all very well opening a nice French gastro pub in the middle of Clapton but if they can’t deal with the realities of what’s going on around them then go back to Surrey.”

Owner Ruairi Gilles, 34, who co-owns the pub with his brother Mark Gilles, said: “It is extremely regrettable. The person who sent the tweet is not a permanent member of staff but we obviously gave him the ability to tweet so we take full responsibility.

“We did try to help the guy. He didn’t want much help.

“On the back of this, people have told us to leave Hackney. We are Londoners, I’ve lived in Clapton for a year-and-a-half, in Hackney for seven years before that and Lewisham before that. We like the area and we’re not just trying to cash in on it.”

“We’re really sorry about the tweet, we wish we could take it back but we can’t.”

The man, who is in his 20s, was given first aid by police officers at the pub before London Ambulance Service arrived. He was taken to hospital and is said to be in a “serious but stable” condition.
