Karen Hills’ team will look to make it two FA Women’s Super League 2 wins in a row this weekend
Lucia Leon says Tottenham Hotspur Ladies attack every game with the mentality of giving their all for each other and points to the squad’s performance against Aston Villa last weekend as them showcasing their refusal to play any other way.
Bianca Baptise continued her impressive start with another goal on Sunday before Coral-Jade Haines displayed her prowess in front of the home faithful.
Karen Hills’ Lilywhites completed a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Cheshunt FC to earn their first three points in this season’s FA Women’s Super League 2 campaign.
Spurs will look to build on that result this weekend when they visit London Bees for an exciting local derby.
Leon said: “Sunday was a quality performance from the team. Every single one of us – from Toni-Anne (Wayne) to the front three – was amazing.
“Everyone worked really hard for each other and we totally deserved the win. We had something like 15 chances in the first half, it was a great game – everyone enjoyed it and we’re all really happy to get our first three points in our first home match.
“I’m really pleased and hopefully we can carry on the winning feeling. Durham (2-1 defeat) was a frustrating match, we had lots of chances as we did in this one probably – we just didn’t put them away.
“But we recovered, had a good week of training and we faced this match. It was a new start on our home ground, everyone was really excited to play in front of our fans – we want to thank them for coming. We really wanted to get these first three points.”
Spurs, similar to at New Ferens Park, started with blistering momentum without capitalising, but Leon says with the strong work ethic it was just a matter of when, not if, the ball would cross the line.
She added: “For the strikers I believe it was a bit of a frustrating game, we did have lots of chances but they just didn’t go in.
“That’s why everyone kept cheering them up and telling them ‘next one – if the first or second one doesn’t go in, the third one will and if not, then someone else will score.’
“It’s a team effort, but at the end of the day we had a clean sheet and two goals went in – and that’s what we all care about.
“That’s what we all want, we want the three points, we want to keep a clean sheet and then everything else is fine. It doesn’t matter how many chances were missed, what matters is that we scored.
“I always say this is probably one of the best teams that you can be on – it’s the best team. The team ethic – just everything is amazing. The way you see your teammates covering for you, tackling - we’re always there for each other and we’ll always give everything.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re new or have been in the team for ten years or two months, we’re going to give our all for each other. We’re always asking for a lot of work, the players that come in or who are on the pitch, we’re always going to ask for their best.
“Ashleigh (Neville) was outstanding - player of the match - she was going up and down, playing with a lot of energy. I tried to go up the pitch as much as possible; there was a lot of space for us to go into.”
All focus now turns to a London derby, when Spurs make the short trip to The Hive as they look to build more momentum.
Leon said: “London Bees are going to be another good side, they have a couple players that we know; it’s going to be a good battle.
“We’ll just forget about this game with Aston Villa now, prepare and recover for the next game. We’re really looking forward to it.”
