A project has been launched to collect the memories of former Hackney air cadets.
The 296 (Stoke Newington) Squadron Air Training Corps is calling for former members to get in touch to contribute to the history project.
First established in 1941, the squadron has been serving the community for more than 80 years at the same headquarters in Albion Road.
Ralph Barwick, a past commanding officer and retired flight lieutenant, is one of a group of members organising the project.
He said: “Every time we get together we tend to say: 'Let’s start reliving the wonderful times we had…we really ought to write these memories down.'”
The history project has already started, and he added: “Amongst ourselves we’ve had a meeting and we all resolved to go and write a piece for it. One exceptional character has kept all of his records in apple-pie order.”
If you are an ex-member of the 296 Stoke Newington Squadron and wish to write something for the project, please contact: A Singh, F/O RAFAC Officer Commanding, 296 (Stoke Newington) Sqn, Air Training Corps, 82 Albion Road, London, N16 9PD. Email: oc.296@aircadets.org
